Children’s Hospital of Michigan is pleased to announce it has received reverification as a Pediatric Burn Center. The Burn Center at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan is Michigan's only verified pediatric burn center exclusively dedicated to the needs of children and one of only a few in the country to be verified by the American Burn Association (ABA) and the Committee on Trauma of the American Colleges of Surgeons (ACS).
Established jointly by the ABA and the ACS in 1995, the Burn Center Verification/Consultation Program for Hospitals promotes the development of burn centers. Elements of this voluntary program include completion of a pre-review questionnaire and an in-depth on-site review by members of the ABA Verification Committee. A written report by the site visit team is reviewed by the ABA Verification Committee and by the Committee on Trauma of the ACS.
Burn Center verification provides a true mark of distinction for a burn center and is an indicator to government, third-party payers, accreditation organizations and patients and their families that the center provides high quality patient care to burn patients.
The designation is given as a result of the spectrum of quality care provided to burn patients from the pre-hospital phase through the rehabilitation process.
The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Burn Center treats hundreds of children annually – making it one of the highest volume pediatric burn centers in the nation.“Caring for burn patients is a challenging process that requires the expertise of multiple disciplines. The program focuses on caring for children of all ages while implementing a comprehensive treatment plan that results in a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return home. From innovative procedures for patients with full-thickness burns over more than 50 percent of their bodies to specialized care and rehabilitation therapy for children with severe burns to their hands and joints, the Burn Center provides comprehensive care for every burn injury. Outpatient follow up care and rehabilitation needs are implemented once the patient is discharged.
“Children are unique individuals who have specific emotional and psychological needs that often require as much attention as the burn itself,” says Dr. Shanti. The burn team establishes an individualized course of treatment for each child and their family to ensure speedy recovery with best outcomes. Specialists on staff include burn physicians, nurses, pediatric anesthesiologists, occupational therapists, dietitians, physical therapists, social workers, child life specialists, teachers, pastoral care, and home care referral.
