Visions for Vacancies: What Should Go in 789 Building?

As construction continues on 789 Building at Ann Arbor Trail and Main Street, building's eventual tenants still not known.

Last summer, one of the big issues facing Plymouth officials was the , a new downtown development on Ann Arbor Trail and Main Street on the old Amoco lot.

Situated in Plymouth's downtown district and historic district, the building had to abide by a set of prescribed aesthetic guidelines to fit the unique character already in place downtown.

The final concept, a two-story retail and restaurant space, remains under construction as residents anticipate what types of new businesses might come downtown.

Given the high profile of this development, we thought it fitting to debut our new series, Visions for Vacancies, with the 789 Building. We'll let readers weigh in on what they'd like to see in empty spaces in Plymouth and Canton. The vacancies can be empty lots, closed businesses or new developments where tenants have not yet been signed.

When possible, we'll provide some guidelines to keep expectations realistic, given our prior knowledge of the property and existing ordinances.

For this particular development, a bar is not an option because the Plymouth City Commission has capped liquor licenses in the city.
