Don't go here! There are a lot of better places.

Would not recommend this home. This funeral home is beautiful inside and outside. The people are very courteous and caring. Most of the people working there were on the young side, and were following the owners instructions. When our family got there to finish the arrangements for my dad's passing, they had some papers for us to sign. One of the papers was to sign for the obituary that appeared in the newspapers. (more on that later) Then the next paper was a contract itemizing everything that the home was doing or did for my dad. One of the items on the list was "embalming." Our family knew that embalming in not a law, is not required in Michigan, and so I stopped the signing until I got an explanation. By the way, the charge for embalming was $795. I told the gentleman that was taking care of us that we did NOT request that and we should have been notified that it was a requirement of his funeral home. The gentleman said he would have to call the owner to get an okay. He got the owner on the phone and he wanted to talk to me. He said he understands that embalming is not a law or required by the state, but it was his own rule that required embalming. I asked why. He said "well, it's to hold down bacteria and disease in his funeral home. So, he requires people to pay him $795 if they want to or not. He won't tell you this ahead of time. I then asked him why we were not informed. He said he got permission over the phone when the hospice nurse called him. I knew this was a lie because I was standing next to the nurse when she called the funeral home and heard everything. When I told him this, he said that, that was the policy of the funeral home. I then asked him why we had to sign for the obituary to be put in the paper, but sign nothing allowing for the embalming? He then said, "Ok, I'll take it off, let me talk to the other guy again." The owner of McCabe funeral home is not nice or understanding of his customers that are keeping him in luxury, and I am not sure what he does is legal or not. I would just caution you to be careful, stay aware, and read everything that they hand you. Don't be afraid to shop around, there are a lot of funeral homes in our area. Call them, they will be glad to hear from you. Ask your family or friends of a good funeral home. I am sorry for your loss.
