Five performance venues to spice up your weekend

Sometimes, we all need to escape into a performance. Metro-Detroit is filled with interesting places to see unique performances. From drag queens to classic movies with organs, there is something for everyone.

1. Rocky Horror Picture Show at the State Wayne Theater

For almost 40 years, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" has been giving audiences "absolute pleasure"  and you can still experience the excitement twice a month at the historic State-Wayne Theater. The performance includes a live-cast shadowing the film in the background and of course, the time wrap!

Make sure to check out the Michigan Rocky Horror Preservation Society's Facebook page for showtimes and special theme nights. For example, the next show on Saturday July 26 will be a tribute to the United Service Organization, a non-profit that provides services and live-entertainment to the military and their families. Everyone is encouraged to wear military uniforms and vintage dresses. Rocky Horror is an R-rated show.

2. Drag Queen Bingo at Five15

It's the bingo we all love and know, with a twist. Every weekend, you can enjoy a coffee and laughs at Drag Queen Bingo at Five15 in Royal Oak.

It's known for being the go-to place for milestone birthdays and bachelorette parties. Therefore, reservations are highly suggested.Must be 18 or over to see the performance.

3. Have some laughs at the Ann Arbor Comedy Club

Get a drink, and be prepared for a night of laughs at the Ann Arbor Comedy Club. The Comedy Club shows up-and-coming and established comedians. They also host open mic nights and offer a wide assortment of food and beverages.

The club is temporarily closed because of construction at their space, but they will be back with more laughs. Eighteen and over are welcomed.

4. Go see a musical at the Starlight Theater

Since 2002, the Starlight Theater in Waterford has been producing quality community theater shows for a reasonable price. This weekend, they will be finishing up their production of "Back to the 80's." The next show will be a youth show of "Disney's 101 Dalmatians" from August 21 to 24.

5. See a classic movie at Redford Theater

This beautiful theater was opened during the golden-age of Hollywood in 1928 and still shows classic movies today. The next movie the theater will be showing is the "Princess Bride" on Friday July 25 at 8pm and Saturday July 26 at 2pm and 8pm. Each movie has a half-hour of organ music before the viewing.

Also check out the theater's special events and live shows. In November, there will be a special showing of "The Christmas Story" with appearances with some of the actors. See the website for more details.
