Longtime Philanthropist Nancy Spencer Dies

Longtime community philanthropist known for work with Goodfellows died Friday.

Nancy Spencer, a longtime philanthropist in the Canton community, died Friday after battling a long illness, the Canton Observer reported.

Spencer died with her husband, John, of nearly 45 years by her side, the report said. The couple's 45th anniversary would have been Sunday.

Spencer was perhaps best known in the community for her work as Canton Goodfellows president for more than 20 years, which helped raise money for Christmas gifts for children in need, the report said.

According to an email from the Canton Chamber of Commerce, there will be visitation from 5-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-8 p.m. Friday with Rosary at 7 p.m. at McCabe Funeral Home, 851 N. Canton Center Road in Canton. 

She will lie in-state at St. Thomas a'Becket Catholic Church, 555 S. Lilley Road in Canton, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with Mass at 10:30 a.m.
