Seconds the Difference as Windsor Defeats Plymouth on Labor Day

WINDSOR- Sometimes the complexion of a hockey game can change in a blink of an eye.

In the case of Labor Day Monday at Windsor Family Credit Union Centre, 11 seconds and then another split second proved to be the difference in the game.

The Windsor Spitfires extended a 3-1 lead in the second period with two goals in 11 seconds to lead 5-1 and went on the defeat the Plymouth Whalers, 5-3, before an announced crowd of 4,463.

Windsor is 1-0-1 in the preseason; Plymouth 0-1-1.

Ryan Moore, John Bowen, Nick Ebert, Slater Koekkoek and Josh Ho-Sang scored for Windsor. Koekkeok's goal at 12:46 of the second period and Ho-Sang's goal at 12:57 was the difference in the game.

Bowen's goal for Windsor came in another split second.  In the final seconds of the first period with Windsor up, 1-0, Kerby Rychel won a faceoff in the Plymouth zone and drew the puck to the top of the right circle to Bowen, who snapped the puck past Plymouth goaltender Riley Corbin with one second left in the frame.

Alex Peters, Zach Lorentz and Liam Dunda scored goals for Plymouth, with Lorentz - the oldest Whaler - and Dunda (the youngest) scoring in the third period to cut the Windsor lead to 5-3.

The third period was a positive frame for the Whalers as they carried the play and outshot the Spits, 18-10.  Plymouth didn't quit and Mike Vellucci pulled backup goaltender Zach Bowman in favor for the extra attacker after calling a time-out with 26 seconds remaining.

Plymouth outshot Windsor, 34-29.

Corbin started for the Whalers, gave up four goals and was relieved by Bowman at 12:46 of the second period.  Bowman gave up one goal - on the second shot he faced - but pitched a shutout the rest of the way.  Jordan DeKort and Dalen Kuchemy split time for Windsor.


Plymouth scratches included Alex Nedeljkovic, Alex King, Victor Crus-Rudberg, Ryan Hartman, Yannick Rathgeb and Gianluca Curcuruto.

Windsor scratches included Trevor Murphy, Remy Giftopoulos, Chris Marchese, Ryan Verbeek, Graeme Browne, Patrick Sieloff, Andrew Burns and Brendan Johnson.

Plymouth is off until Fri. Sept. 13 when they play in London at Budweiser Gardens at 7:30 pm against the Knights.

The Whalers practice Tuesday through Friday from 1:45-3:15 pm at Compuware Arena.  The practices are open to the public.
