Canton Boy's Death Leads to Manslaughter, Abuse Charges Against Mother, Man

18-month-old boy died June 9 after ingesting prescription drugs.

The June 9 death of an 18-month Canton child after ingesting prescription drugs has led to criminal charges against the boy's mother and a man who had lived together on Maben near Canton Center and Ford roads, according to the Canton Observer

The boy's death led to charges of involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse against his 20-year-old mother, Andrea Nicole Rodgers, and Ryan Keith Moody, 25.

According to the Observer report, authorities declined to discuss the case at length, but said Moody was not the boy's father. Rodgers now lives in LaSalle and Moody now lives in Monroe, the report said.

Both Rodgers and Moody will face a Nov. 2 preliminary examination that will determine whether they should stand trial in Wayne County Circuit Court, the report said, where they could face 15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and four years for second-degree child abuse, if convicted.

Rodgers and Moody had a video arraignment Tuesday with 35th District Court from the Canton police station, the report said. Det. Tim Wright testified that the case involved the boy ingesting unspecified prescription drugs that had been stored carelessly, the report said.
