Canton Man Leaves Incense Burning, Home Catches Fire

The following information was provided by the Canton Township Police Department. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

A Canton Township man's home caught fire around 4:30 a.m. Jan. 2 on the 46000 block of Spinning Wheel Drive, according to a Canton Township Police report.

The first responding officer said he could smell heavy smoke when he arrived on the street, the report said. When he came to the front of the house, he said he could see smoke from several windows and the homeowner standing in bare feet on the driveway, according to the report.

The homeowner said he left incense burning in the kitchen and went to sleep, the report said. The man said he woke up to the sound of smoke detectors and went downstairs, according to the report. He said he saw two boxes on fire with very little smoke near where he left the incense on, the report said.

The man said he called police immediately, and the Canton Fire Department arrived to put the fire out, the report said. The house was turned over to the homeowner at 6:50 a.m., at which time he retrieved his keys and his car from the garage and got a hotel room at La Quinta, according to the report.
