Canton Police Arrest Man for Allegedly Leaving Walmart with Unpaid Items

Canton Township Police arrested a man on third-degree retail fraud charges at about 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Walmart, 45555 Michigan Ave, according to a police report.

A Walmart asset protection associate said he observed the man in the store with an open crock pot box, the report said. He saw the man select a Jensen car stereo and two RCA portable DVD systems, cut open the Mainstays Cookware crock pot box and remove the contents, according to the report. He then put the three electronic items inside the crock pot box and used packaging tape to close and seal the box, the report said. The Walmart associate said he saw the man leave the box in the housewares department and exit the store at 2:52 p.m.

The Walmart associate said he saw the man return to the store at 6:17 p.m. and put the same crock pot box in his cart, the report said. The man paid the price on the box, $31.77, and left without paying for the concealed items, according to the report. When stopped by associates, the man admitted to the unpaid purchase, the report said. The items were valued at about $500.

The man admitted to what he did when arrested and said he stole the items because he was having a hard time paying bills for his family, according to the report. He has a hearing at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 7 at 35th District Court.

Canton Woman's Car Stolen

A Canton woman's car was stolen between Oct. 21-22 from the 41000 block of Greenwood Drive, according to a police report. 

The vehicle owner told police that her son parked her 1998 blue-green Jeep in front of the house at about 10 p.m. Oct. 21 and the vehicle was locked, the report said. It was noticed missing at about 8:15 a.m. Oct. 22.

The woman said she has both sets of keys and no one has permission to take the vehicle, according to the report.
