Canton Senior Citizen Cited for Hit and Run After Running Over Mailbox

Police: Woman damaged mailbox and ran over several lawns.


A Canton woman was ticketed for leaving the scene of an accident and failing to use due care after running over a mailbox and several lawns near Sheldon and Saltz roads on April 16, according to a police report. 

Police were flagged down on Saltz Road and were told there was a red car on the lawn area of Sheldon and Saltz. Upon arrival, police saw a mailbox on Sheldon was damaged and in several pieces, and tire tracks leading across the lawns of three houses before heading back out on Sheldon Road, the report said. 

A witness went up to police and said he saw a red Ford Edge cross over two lanes, jump over the curb and hit the mailbox before continuing down the sidewalk and grass, turning southbond on Sheldon road without stopping. The man said he would be able to identify the driver, who was a woman in her 70s without any teeth, the report said.

Police checked the area, and located a red Ford Edge in a driveway on Lemont Road and saw a dent in the front hood as well as fresh grass in the tires and along the bottom of the car, the report said.

The homeowner, who matched the description of the driver, told police she was on her way home from signing taxes, but didn't know what happened. She told police she didn't think she blacked out, but may have fallen asleep because she had been having problems sleeping lately, according to the report.

When asked why she didn't stop or contact the property owners, the woman told police that she was going to go back later, the report said.
