Crime Report: Man Struggles with Walmart Employees, Arrested on Theft Charge

were dispatched to , 45555 Michigan Ave., for a report of an uncooperative man accused of stealing merchandise, according to a police report.

When police arrived, police saw the man seated in the store’s loss prevention office, out of breath, sweating and wearing a ripped T-shirt, according to the report. One of the store’s loss prevention officers was quivering and appeared shaken, the report said, and the store’s assistant manager also was sweating profusely.

One loss prevention officer told police he was in his office watching the closed-circuit television in the hardware area when he saw the man acting suspiciously, looking around nervously, the report said. He told police he saw the man rip open a set of Stanley-brand screwdrivers from their package and began to pry open a secured box, which is used to display valuable merchandise, the report said. The employee told police he saw the man break open the box and take a package of Contour-brand diabetic testing strips, removing them from the package and placing them in his pocket, the report said.

The employee told police he saw the man leave a full cart at the self-checkout and walk toward the store’s doors without paying for the testing strips, the report said.

When the employee identified himself and tried to stop the man, he refused, the report said, and tried to get past the employee. The employee then tried physically redirecting the man back in the store, as the man continued to try to pull away, the report said.

The store’s assistant manager witnessed the altercation and, according to the report, helped grab the shirt and jacket of the man, escorting him back into the store.

The man told police he took the testing strips and both the man and the employees said no punches were thrown during the altercation. The value of the items taken totaled $77.15, the report said.

Police arrested the man on charges of third-degree retail fraud.

Woman arrested on charges of stealing cologne

Canton Township Police were dispatched April 16 to , 41920 Ford Road, for a report of a woman taking cologne, according to a police report.

The store’s loss prevention officer told police a woman took a 1.7-ounce bottle of Escada Magnetism cologne, valued at $34.99, and a 1.7-ounce bottle of Calvin Klein Eternity, also valued at $34.99, the report said.

The employee told police she saw the woman select the two bottles from a store shelf, unwrapping the bottles and leaving the boxes in the kitchen section of the store, the report said. She told police the woman then placed the bottles in a bag from another store in her cart and covered it with a beach towel.

According to the report, the woman spoke very little English, but said “guilty” when questioned by police. Police cited her on charges of third-degree retail fraud.

Woman arrested on charges of taking DVD, cosmetic and clothing items

While conducting routine handicap parking patrol April 12 at , 39500 Ford Road,  Canton Township police responded to a report of a woman accused of taking several items from the store, according to a police report.

The store’s loss prevention officer told police he saw the woman place several clothing items, cosmetics and a DVD — worth $67.22 total — into her empty purse before trying to exit the store, the report said.

Among the items were a DVD with the films Goodfellas and Heat, skin therapy, Revlon gloss, lip color, grey and black shorts and black and orange sports bras.

Police arrested the woman, who had several warrants in nearby communities, on charges of third-degree retail fraud.
