Crime Report: Police Arrest Man on Charges of Credit Card Fraud

The following information was provided by the Canton Township Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

responded June 24 to , 45555 Michigan Ave., for a report of an attempted purchase with a fraudulent credit card, according to a police report.

Police already were in the parking lot of the store when they received the call, and stopped the man as he exited the store. When police patted the man down, the report said, they found 13 Visa debit cards in his pocket.

According to the report, the man tried to buy an Apple iPad, valued at $499.99, but each of the four cards he tried were declined. According to the report, he asked the cashier if the store had an ATM and was told there was one at the front of the store, but the man instead exited the store.

The store’s loss prevention officer told police the store has had a lot of fraud with Visa Green Dot prepaid debit cards, with people often using the cards to try to buy big-ticket items, including Apple-brand products.

Police checked the status of the cards and found that one appeared to be counterfeited. When the magnetic strip was put through a reader, the number read differed from what appears on the front of the card.

Police also found the man had two existing warrants out from Michigan State Police, both for traffic offenses.

The officers handed the case over to detectives for further investigation.

Police arrest man on shoplifting charges

Canton Township Police responded June 25 to , 45001 Ford Road, to assist with an officer who had a shoplifting suspect held at Taser point in the parking lot of the store.

The store’s loss prevention officer told police the man had entered the store with a second man and selected four bottles of liquor, placing them into a shopping cart. The employee told police he then moved to another aisle and placed the bottles in his backpack, then went to the bakery section and removed the bottles from his backpack and left the store. Then, the loss prevention officer told police, the man re-entered the store, placed the bottles back into his backpack and exited the store without paying for the merchandise.

When the additional officers arrived, the original responding officer had the man placed into custody.

The value of the bottles totaled $76.80.
