Grandmother Dies in Livonia Fire After Saving Grandsons

A 73-year-old woman died Tuesday in a Livonia house fire after alerting her teenage grandsons of the blaze, according to the Detroit Free Press.

According to the Free Press, the woman lived in Redford Township and was babysitting the teens in the boys' family's home on the 36000 block of Curtis Road.

Report details abuse of special-needs preschoolers

A lawyer retained by parents of two special-needs preschoolers say the abuse their children allegedly suffered while in former teacher Sharon Turbiak's Webster Elementary classroom in Livonia was "atrocious and appalling," according to a report by the Observer & Eccentric.

The alleged abuse was detailed in a report recently made public by Livonia Public Schools through the Freedom of Information Act, the report indicated.

Turbiak, who has yet to be charged, has been on paid administrative leave from April until March 31, 2013, when her resignation takes effect, the report said. 

$14,500 in jewelry stolen from 90-year-old woman

A 90-year-old Novi resident reported that $14,500 in jewelry and another $700 in cash were stolen from her residence on Marks Drive in Novi sometime between 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 and 8 p.m. on Nov. 12, according to Novi Patch.

The woman told police she went for a walk at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 and left her door unlocked, the report said. She also has a key outside of the front door in case she gets locked out, the report said.

18 guns stolen in Northville apartment robberies

Several electronics and 18 guns were stolen when four Northville apartments were burglarized Monday afternoon, according to Northville Patch.

City police were dispatched to the Tree Tops apartment building after one of the residents came home to find his door open, the report said. Police found the doors to four units had been kicked in. Several TVs and laptops were stolen from the apartments.

Shoplifting suspect flees store, crashes car into tree

A man was arrested on charges of third-degree retail fraud after a loss prevention officer at Kohl's in Northville witnessed the man concealing merchandise at 5 p.m. on Nov. 8, according to Northville Patch.

The loss prevention officer confronted the man when he left the store without paying, the report said, and the man immediately fled in his car.

The Northville Township Police went in search of the car and found it off the roadway, where it had struck a tree, the report said. The police officer saw a male running across the Bahama Breeze parking lot and activated his patrol unit siren to stop him, the report said. The man was then arrested for retail fraud.
