Handguns, Assault Rifle Seized from Canton Man's Home

Police said they executed a search warrant after a neighbor complained of hearing gun shots and finding casings in the parking lot.

A 23-year-old Canton man was issued a citation for a weapons offense and discharge of a firearm after police executed a search warrant on Stacy Drive in Meadowood Townhomes, according to a police report.

A neighbor told police that he heard somebody shooting off three shots from a gun on July 9 around 9 p.m. then saw a man walking up to the building from the direction the shots came from. The neighbor told police the man expressed his frustration with parking near their building and said that he "busted three shots in the air" due to not being able to find a parking spot, the report said.

The neighbor told police he went to the parking lot and collected two 9-millimeter casings from the ground. The neighbor was able to give police a description of the man and said he would be able to pick him out if he saw him again, the report said.

Police obtained a search warrant for the man's home after his address showed that he had several guns registered in his name, the report said.

When officers knocked on the man's door, they heard someone approach then heard a racking noise consistent with the action of a gun being made ready to fire, according to the report.

Police identified themselves and secured the man and his wife who was also home in handcuffs. They told officers that nobody else was in the house, except for an infant left inside upstairs, the report said.

During the search, police located and secured a silver Ruger P89 9-millimeter handgun sitting on a shelf in the living room. The man told police that there were several other guns upstairs in his bedroom, the report said.

Police discovered a CN Romarm assault rifle with two 30-round combat magazines which was leaned up against a dresser as well as a Ruger P90 45-Caliber handgun inside the woman's purse, according to the report.

All the guns and ammunition were seized and taken for safe-keeping during the investigation.

The man first told police that he had not fired any of his guns, until they advised him they were seizing all weapons and would determine which gun had been recently fired. The man then admitted he fired his 9-millimeter handgun on the Fourth of July for target practice at a shooting range, the report said.

The man could not say which shooting range he was at, and finally admitted that he fired it at a friend's house. The man also could not say where the friend's house was, only that it was about two hours away in Macomb County, the report said.

The man told police that he was a gun collector, but that he did not shoot any of his guns and denied having a conversation with anyone in the complex about it.
