Hep C Outbreak Suspect May Have Infected Michigan Patients, Officials Say

Canton man's past Detroit-area employment triggers public alert from state health officials.

Michigan health officials triggered a public alert Monday for patients from four area hospitals where David Kwiatkowski of Canton had worked before being arrested this month on charges of infecting at least 30 hospital patients in New Hampshire with hepatitis C, the Detroit Free Press is reporting.

Kwiatkowski, 33, a traveling medical technician from Canton who worked for employers on a temporary basis, worked in at least six Michigan medical facilities between 2003 and 2007, AnnArbor.com is reporting, including Oakwood Annapolis in Wayne, University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor, Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit and Harper Hospital in Detroit.

Kwiatkowski was  in Massachusetts on charges of causing an outbreak among patients at Exeter Hospital in Exeter, NH.

While an alert was issued Monday by state officials, no Michigan cases have been tied to Kwiatkowski, according to the Free Press.

Investigations are ongoing regarding Kwiatkowski's work at the local medical facilities, AnnArbor.com reported.

According to the Free Press, those who received narcotic injections between 2003-2007 at the hospitals that employed Kwiatkowski are urged to call:

Sinai-Grace and Harper: (888) 300-3627.
University of Michigan Hospital: (877) 233-4040.
Oakwood Annapolis: (734) 467-4111.

The problem with this is that I do not KNOW if I got injections of narcotics when I went to those hospitals because I had surgeries and they do all sorts of things when you are out. I figure if I had Hep C it would be apparent by now though.

This is true - the signs could be apparent by now - it could be worth calling the numbers listed for more information, though, given the seriousness of the disease. He could have been clean when he worked in Michigan, though.

I was infected with Hept c.in Michigan. I had given blood prior an did not have the virus. I received epidurals an was extremely ill which lead me to hospitalizing with in 6 weeks of the injections The investigator for the State of Michigan took one full year to go the clinic only after I had other organizations help me, by this time doc moved his office an staff . The inspector for the state had no knowledge of cross contamination nor was he informed as to the possible ways to spread the virus. He called the clinic the day before to let them know he was coming in. No other patients were tested and it was only done to satisfy my demands an complaints. Dont trust the State get tested..

. And I had two doctors reports saying that this office was the most probable source of my infection an the doctors requested the health dept investigate which was also put in writing by U of M an Beaumont! The State did not want to get involved nor did they do a proper investigation ! I did save all the documentation/ My dealings with the State of Michigan gives me little faith as to full disclosure. I was hospitalized for 5 days. My body fought off the infection eradicating it which meant it was recent infection. I had no risk factors not even a tatoo, an was a red cross donor who I called an was NEGITIVE. I have all the emails an letters that I sent to the Health Dept State, three complaint forms, CDC and the Governor. It was a travesty and I was treated poorly an outraged that their was no action or concern. It took me years to recover I lost my job home health insurance and depressed. .Do not be fooled into thinking they the State of Michigan will report an say every where he worked, he was temp. I was a constant thorn in their side and was trying to save others my misery. I was treated with contempt and heard budget cuts. Get tested, the State didn’t help me in fact they did all in their power to ignore my doctors an my request. I saved all emails an documented the dates. I knew it was a going to come out some day, it was allowed to progress to the level it did by the lack of reporting an follow up with the state of Michigan.
