Homeless Man Arrested After Plymouth Township Crime Spree

Police said a homeless man was arrested on larceny charges and vehicle theft last week.

A 41-year-old homeless man was arrested in the early morning hours on Aug. 7 after committing several crimes, including stealing a phone, running out on a bar tab and stealing a car on Aug. 5, according to a police report.

According to the reports, the crime spree began around 10 p.m. Monday night when police responded to a call at the CVS at Ann Arbor and Sheldon Roads. A man reported that he and his brother came out of the store to find the man inside of the car he had borrowed from his fiance. When confronted, the man ran off.

While driving away, the man noticed his cell phone missing from the car. Police pulled over the man and his brother based on witness accounts of the altercation outside of CVS, the report said.

Shortly afterwards, around 10:24 p.m., police were called to the Plymouth Pub for a customer that left without paying for his beer. The bartender told police that the man came in, sat down at the bar and ordered a 16-ounce Labatt beer. A few minutes later, he grabbed the beer and ran outside without paying, the report said.

The bartender told police she chased him outside and saw him getting into a light colored Chevrolet Trailblazer.

While speaking with staff, police discovered that the Trailblazer the man left in belonged to another customer, the report said.

The car owner told police that the man came in and sat to his right. He told police that he placed his car keys on the bar next to his drink, got up to use the restroom and returned to find his keys missing, the report said.

Police located the stolen phone from the car at CVS inside the Plymouth Pub. It was left behind by the man when he ran outside, the report said.

A short time later, police received a report of a hit-and-run accident at Plymouth Square Apartments, at Sheldon and Ann Arbor Roads. A Trailblazer hit a parked car and a light pole, according to the report. It was later determined the car was the same one that was stolen from the Plymouth Pub, the report said.

The man was arrested around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Kroger parking lot after a Plymouth Township police officer spotted him driving the stolen Trailbalzer, according to Plymouth Township Police Detective Charles Rozum.

Rozum said that officers knew who the man was because of having prior contact with him, so they were watching the area because his mother lives nearby.

The man faces charges of larceny from a vehicle, larceny from a building and vehicle theft.
