Man Arrested on Shoplifting Charges at Meijer in Canton

The following information was provided by the Canton Police Department. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

Canton Township Police responded to Meijer, 45001 Ford Road, for a report of a man leaving the store with a shopping cart full of unpaid merchandise, according to a police report.

Police stopped the man as he exited the store parking lot in a red SUV, the report said.

The store’s loss prevention officers told police the man had three power tools and a Carhartt jacket in his cart when he tried leaving the store without paying, the report said.

According to the report, the value of the recovered items totaled $264.75, and Meijer wishes to prosecute.

The man told police he had gone into the store after bowling to pick up construction items and realized he had forgotten his wallet. He told police that he had been distracted by a phone call and kept walking out of the store with the items and, unsure of what to do, left the scene.

Police arrested the man on charges of third-degree retail fraud.

Police say registered sex offender failed to report whereabouts

Canton Township Police received an anonymous tip that a 51-year-old registered sex offender no longer was living at his residence at the 8000 block of Brooke Park and had moved to North Dakota for a new job, according to a police report.

Police were unable to locate the man at the address at which he is registered. Under state law, the man must live where he is registered as an offender, the report said.

According to the report, the man appeared to have moved over the weekend of Oct. 20.

The man is on the sex offender registry for a conviction on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, the report said.
