Man, Woman Arrested on Connection With Walmart Shoplifting Incident

The following information was provided by the Canton Township Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

Canton Township Police responded Jan. 20 to the 5500 block of Belleville Road to assist an officer in locating a man wanted in connection with a shoplifting incident at Walmart, 45555 Michigan Ave. in Canton.

By the time the officer arrived, the man had been taken into custody, the report indicated.

The store’s loss prevention officer told police when the man entered the store, she felt “something wasn’t right” with him, so he began so watch him on video surveillance, where she saw him head toward the store’s electronics section, select a 42-inch LG television set and place it into a cart, the report indicated. She told police she saw the man then push the cart past the store’s checkout lanes and out the east doors of the store without stopping to pay.

The employee told police she tried to stop the man as he was leaving and he continued to walk toward a blue Sebring driven by a woman. She told police as the man approached the car, it pulled away from him and the man ran toward Belleville Road, the report indicated.

Police stopped the driver in the blue Sebring, who had two suspended-license warrants out of Canton, as well as several other warrants from other jurisdictions, the report indicated.

Police arrested the man on second-degree retail fraud charges.

The TV was valued at $448, according to the report. It was turned over to the store’s loss prevention officer.
