Michigan State Police Fire Marshal's Office Investigating Plymouth Fire Station Fire

An early morning fire damaged the downtown Plymouth Fire Station on Sunday.

It is still too early to tell when the downtown Plymouth Fire Station will be operational again after an early morning fire significantly damaged the building Sunday morning.

"It's premature at this point, but we're fully functional - so we're good," said Plymouth City Manager Paul Sincock.

Emergency services have been moved to Plymouth Township Fire Station on Wilcox Road while the fire is investigated by the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal's Office.

"You don't investigate your own fire," he said about the state police fire marshal's involvement.

Sincock said there was substantial fire and smoke damage to the apparatus bay of the station, but the two 800 square foot additions that were added in 2011 were relatively untouched.

"The (new) locker room had some minor smoke damage, but that's already been cleaned," he said.

Sincock said the total damage to the building has not yet been assessed by the insurance companies.

The fire began around 4 a.m. Sunday morning. Police officers smelled smoke initially and discovered the fire and alerted the Fire Department.

There were active smoke alarms in the building, but they are not the kind most people have in their homes, Sincock said.

According to Sincock, the alarms were working and smoke was actively being ventilated when police officers discovered the fire.
