Mississippi Man Charged with Attempted Murder in Canton

Canton Police arrested the suspect after a Monday afternoon car chase.

Canton Police have arrested a Mississippi man and charged him with five felonies, including attempted murder, after a violent incident on the 900 block of Kings Way Monday afternoon.

Cedric Javus Browne, 31, was arraigned in 35th District Court and charged with assault with intent to murder, a felony that carries a sentence up to life in prison; assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, a felony with a 10-year sentence; assault with a dangerous weapon, a 4-year felony; fleeing a police officer, a 5-year felony; and possession of a controlled substance, a 4-year felony.

A resident living on Kings Way called police on Monday at about 12:30 p.m., saying his niece's boyfriend had forced his way into the home, assaulting the caller and threatening him with a knife before fleeing in a white Lincoln Town Car, police said.

Police attempted to stop a vehicle matching that description after spotting it traveling east on Cherry Hill Road. The driver refused to pull over, and police chased the car into Westland, at which point the driver abandoned the car and began running, police said. He was taken into custody without incident in the 39000 block of Dillingham, according to the police statement.

His bond set at $100,000, Browne faces a preliminary exam on April 15 in 35th District Court.
