Two New Police Cars on Order For City of Plymouth

The City of Plymouth Police Department will soon add two new Chevrolet Tahoes to its fleet.

The City Commission unanimously approved a resolution to purchase the new cars Monday night.

City Manager Paul Sincock said the cars will be in service approximately sometime in January or February.

The City of Plymouth Police Department currently uses the police version of the Tahoe and Chevrolet Caprice, with the later replacing the old Ford Crown Victoria sedans in the fleet. The

"Our experience with the Tahoe is that it's had significantly lower operational costs than the old Crown Victoria," Sincock said.

The city was able to receive state bid pricing through Lou LaRiche Chevrolet.

"While Lou LaRiche is not the designated dealer, General Motors has to give them the same (government) pricing that they give the designated dealer," Sincock said. "So we're going to get the same price at Lou LaRiche and they're going to do all the warranty work anyway, so it makes sense for us to purchase locally. There's not a whole lot of revenue for the dealer there, but at least it is a vehicle sold through the dealer."

Through the discounted bid pricing, the two new Tahoe police edition vehicles cost the City of Plymouth $26,873.55 each, or a total of $53,747.10. This price is $158 more per car than the city paid two years ago, but significantly under the budgeted amount of $75,000 for the purchase.

"It's quite a discount. I would like to buy cars this way," Sincock said.

The price will not include additional expenses for things like decal work and equipment transfer.
