Court Blotter: Assault and Battery, Marijuana Possession and Firearms Possession

A summary of court cases in the 35th District Court from June 30, 2011 – July 6, 2011, covering Plymouth, Canton and Northville.

The following items are updates on cases in the 35th District Court, which serves Plymouth, Canton and Northville. Not all items, unless otherwise noted, reflect guilty pleas or convictions.

Brandi Marie Haley, 30, Ypsilanti

  • Violated her probation sentence on an assault and battery conviction, where she was found guilty after a jury trial
  • Charged with hindering and obstructing a police officer and giving false information to a police officer
  • Probation department will review sentencing 

Willis James Morgan, 50, Detroit

  • Pleaded not guilty to an assault and battery charge on April 26, 2011
  • Pretrial held on July 5, 2011, where parties scheduled a trial management conference for all parties involved.  They will discuss the charged against the defendant, a list of potential witnesses and, if this will be a jury trial, discuss jury selection

Brandee Lee Scutchfield, 24, Ypsilanti

  • Pleaded guilty to third degree retail fraud on June 20, 2011
  • Scheduled for sentencing on July 5, 2011
  • Failed to appear for sentencing and a warrant was issued for her arrest

Darrell Antoine Tomlin, 22, Detroit

  • Pretrial held for operating while intoxicated and a possession of firearms charge
  • Pleaded not guilty and scheduled for trial 

Ruscoe Levi Lawson, 30, Westland

  • Pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana
  • Given a deferred sentence with a substance abuse evaluation, fines and court costs, and non-reporting probation. This means if Mr. Lawson complies with the terms of his probation, his sentence and guilty plea will be discharged by the court.

Gloria Jean Gaines, 55, Highland Park

  • Charged with assault and battery
  • Pleaded not guilty and waived a jury trial and agreed to a bench trial, which means her trial will be held before the judge, who will determine her guilt or innocence.
  • Pretrial hearing scheduled for July 27, 2011

Adam Robert Keasey, 22, Aurora, IL

  • Violation of probation on charges of operating while impaired and possession of marijuana
  • Disposed of on a guilty plea on May 26, 2010, and was sentenced to probation
  • Violated probation and a bench warrant was issued for failure to appear in court
  • Hearing held on July 5, 2011, for violation of probation and his case discharged under Michigan’s delayed sentencing act
