Officials: Election Turnout Slow So Far Today in Plymouth, Canton

Clerks report low turnout so far today at polls.

Despite hotly contested local and county races, Plymouth and Canton are reporting low turnouts so far in today's primary election.

Plymouth Township Deputy Clerk Eric Bacyinski reported 1,225 voters as of noon today. At voting precincts around the township, voters were scarce. 

"The turnout's been slow, but hopefully it will pick up later in the day," Bacyinski said.

Plymouth Township voters have a with tight Republican races for township clerk, treasurer and trustee positions. 

Canton Township has a , but still has four trustee seats up for grabs.

The Canton Township Clerk's office reported 1,863 voters today, according to its noon figures.

In the City of Plymouth, which has no local races, no turnout figures were available but the clerk's office said the turnout was "low."

Both Plymouth and Canton townships reported high absentee ballot returns, however.

In Plymouth Township, of 3,953 ballots sent out to voters, 3,479 were returned — 88 percent of the total absentee ballots.

In Canton Township, about 85 percent of its more than 6,000 absentee ballots were returned, totaling more than 5,100 ballots.

Polls remain open in the City of Plymouth, Plymouth Township and Canton Township until 8 p.m. today.
