Five Things You Need to Know June 14, 2011

It's Flag Day; Pepsi gives P-CEP band a fundraising shot the 2011 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and a grant for Detroit Area Diaper Bank.

One: The main item on today's Plymouth-Canton Community Schools' board agenda is the budget, which must be finalized by the end of this month. The board will present a Volunteer in Public Schools Extra Miler Award tonight. The meeting is at 7 p.m. today in the district offices of the E.J. McClendon Education Center, 454 S. Harvey St., Plymouth.

Two: The Detroit Area Diaper Bank, Inc. has been selected as Monday's "Summer of Sharing" grant recipient by , which donated $1,060 to the non-profit."This grant will enable us to procure more than 10,000 diapers for our smallest neighbors in need," the diaper bank's announcement on Facebook said.

Three: The board of trustees meeting set for today will begin with an early presentation by CityView, which provides public online access to township information such as mapping, licensing and permits. Four: Canton's Downtown Development Authority (DDA) board of directors meets at 8 a.m. Wednesday in Supervisor Phil LaJoy's office at the Canton Township Administration Building, 1150 S. Canton Center Rd. The 12-member board will talk about cash flow, approving reusable shopping bags and approving the 2011 Jazz Concert Series artists' fees.

Five: The Plymouth-Canton Educational Park Marching Band has a date to march in the 2011 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This would be the first Michigan high school band in the parade in decades. The cost is steep for travel and accommodations, about $1,000 per student — $200,000 total. One way the band is trying to raise money is through the Pepsi Refresh Project. While the band is getting lots of love (and votes) from fellow Michigan high school band members and supporters, they could use your vote too. Just sayin'.
