Five Things You Need to Know Tuesday, May 31, 2011

It's a good day to donate helpful items (and a few goodies) to troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

ONE: Today is the final day to donate to the 's drive to help Michigan Military Moms get care packages to our troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Here's what they need: baby wipes, bug repellent wipes, flavored drink mix packets, beef jerky (no pork); duct or electrical tape, juice boxes, snack and energy bars, Gold Bond Powder, Q-Tips, AT&T calling cards. You can also help pay for shipping; checks should be made out to Michigan Military Moms.

TWO: Canton's "splash playgrounds" are now open. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at  and at  1 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The splash pads are free but you may want to invest in water shoes, which are recommended.

THREE: 's Board of Trustees meet at 7 p.m. today but call ahead or check the website before you run over to the administration building — no agenda was posted online, so the meeting may not be happening. Same goes for the tentatively scheduled special meeting tonight of the board of education at .
