Patch Picks: Good Reads

March is National Reading Month. Canton Public Library has a list of book suggestions.

With March comes National Reading Month and on Wednesday, Read Across America Day. On Wednesday, dozens of children were treated to a lively reading of stories by Dr. Seuss by 's program specialist Kristen Kostielney.

But every day, librarians are ready to share their love of reading, either in person or online with a special blog called May We Suggest? He few books recommended by Canton Public Library’s librarians:

  • Little Black Crow follows a young boy as he watches a flying bird while wondering where the little crow goes. The boy's question leades to his thinking about family, friends, love, and fear and comes back to his relationship with the crow.
  • The Revolutionary Yardscape: Ideas for Repurposing Local Materials to Create Containers, Pathways, Lighting, and More by Matthew Levesque — The title pretty much speaks for itself, and just in time for spring, too.
  • Lewis Buzbee's mystery, Steinbeck's Ghost, takes readers into the world of Travis, 13 and unhappy about relocating to a new place with his family, until he makes a discovery at the Salinas Library. His delight is threatened by proposed cuts to the library's budget which in turn leads to another discovery.
  • Sewing School: 21 Sewing Projects Kids Will Love to Make, by Amie Petronis Plumley & Andria Lisle; photography by Justin Fox Burks — A good beginner's guide for children and adults who want to get stitch up a new hobby.
  • Since March is also Women's History Month, the librarians have suggested a long list of biographies celebrating extraordinary thinkers and doers such as Marie Curie, Eleanor Roosevelt, Susan B. Anthony, Florence Nightingale and many other remarkable women. See them all at May We Suggest?
