Special Assessment District to be Discussed at Township Special Meeting Tonight

Meeting about ballot language for effort to preserve fire services begins at 7 p.m. at Township Hall.

A petition to create a special assessment district in Plymouth Township to preserve existing fire services will be the subject of debate tonight at a special meeting of the Plymouth Township Board of Trustees.

The Citizens Action Group of Plymouth Township has submitted a petition with 3,514 signatures from land owners in the township, according to Jennifer Mann, an organizer who submitted the petition to the Township Clerk on Aug. 16 to be included on the Nov. 8 ballot, just in time for the election filing deadline.

According to Mann last week, the tax question would levy 1 mill on township residents for a five-year special assessment, which would fund the preservation of current township fire services. The township fire department will lose revenue after this year when the City of Plymouth pulls out of its current fire agreement with the township.

In a mass email today, Mann accused the township of trying to keep the vote off the ballot this fall. The township clerk has until Aug. 30 to validate the signatures and put the assessment on the ballot.

"We hope the township will not undermine the will of the the citizens and deny them the right to vote to maintain their current fire and EMS services," she wrote.
