Around Canton: Week in Review

The arrest of a girls lacrosse coach, school budget and St. Patrick's Day.

Plymouth High School girls lacrosse coach – and Canton resident – Stephen Jay Nyquist was charged with 12 counts related to child pornography. The 65-year-old Nyquist was arraigned at Plymouth’s 35th District Court on all counts. The charges include three counts of possession of child sexually abusive material, three counts of distribution of child sexually abusive material and six counts of using a computer with another to commit a crime.

The past week also saw the Canton girls basketball team , only to miss a chance at a state title by the slimmest of margins. After overcoming a strong push by Midland in the second half of Tuesday night’s matchup – with a 35-32 hold-on win – the Chiefs earned a shot at Inkster on Friday afternoon at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

The two teams traded shots from the opening tip to the final buzzer.  The Chiefs and Vikings swapped leads 10 times – and were tied seven others—in a battle that went down to the final seconds. , defeating Canton 39-38, earning a chance at a state title against Detroit Renaissance on Saturday.  The Vikings claimed the state Class A crown with a 43-37 win.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries hosted the of their newest Michigan restaurant on Monday, in the Canton Corners strip mall on the southwest corner of Ford and Lilley roads. It is Southeast Michigan restaurateur Mike Abrams' 10th Five Guys location.

With the possibility of a for the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools this year, school board members started weighing options on Tuesday and Thursday. Options discussed include closing an elementary school, eliminating teachers and increasing class sizes.

Canton residents had an opportunity this week to . The township’s assessor’s office accepted petitions beginning on Monday by those property owners who wanted to have their cases heard by the board of review. Canton Property tax assessments were mailed out on February 25.

St. Patrick’s Day brought out the Irish in everyone this week. Canton’s Bailey’s Irish Pub was among our , which highlighted the top destinations in Canton, Plymouth and Northville for Thursday’s shenanigans. The Canton Senior Center also hosted its annual on Tuesday at the Summit on the Park. Among the festivities were a buffet lunch, Irish music by Peter Fetter and performances by the O’Hare School of Irish Dance.
