Discovery Middle School Principal Makes Cut in Lake Fenton High School Leader Search

Discovery Middle School Principal Roche LaVictor will be interviewed Wednesday as a part of a two-day process to hire the new leader of .

School officials selected eight finalists — out of 61 applicants — to be interviewed Tuesday and Wednesday for the opportunity to become the school’s next principal.

Current principal Jerry Kramer is leaving the school district after 27 years of service as an administrator, teacher and coach. The 61-year-old has been in education for 38 years.

The job was posted Feb. 15 through March 18.

“There were some good candidates, some very strong candidates,” said Lake Fenton Superintendent Wayne Wright.

The candidates to be interviewed Tuesday night are Howell High School Assistant Principal Jason Schrock, Summerfield Schools Principal Scott Leach, Chippewa Valley High School Assistant Principal Mark Adamski and Goodrich Elementary Principal Mark Ellis.

Galesburg-Augusta High School Principal Todd Reynolds, Plymouth-Canton Discovery Middle School Principal Roche LaVictor, South Lakes High School Principal Louis Steigerwald and Lake Fenton teacher Elizabeth Walker will be interviewed Wednesday evening.

Wright said each interview will last about an hour and candidates will be asked 21 questions.

“We are looking for someone with knowledge of high school administration, understanding of the trimester system and knowledge of curriculum,” Wright said.

The candidates will be interviewed by a seven-person team consisting of two board members, two administrators, two teachers and one parent. Wright said three or four candidates will be selected for second-round interviews on April 19 and either April 20 or 21.

Another team, with the same composition but different individuals, will be established for the second round of interviews.

Kramer said he will try to make the switch to a new leader as easy as possible.

"I'm trying to wrap things up and leave it in decent shape," he said. "I want to help with a smooth transition."

According to the 2009/2010 budget, the position paid a base salary of $92,000 in addition to benefits.

“Salary will depend on the individual’s educational background and their experience,” Wright said.
