Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Natasha Consul

The Salem High School sophomore is one of 100 finalists in the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition.

  • Name: Natasha Consul, 15
  • School:
  • Accomplishment: Natasha is one of 100 finalists out of 8,000 students who participated in the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition this year. The Canton resident will be honored at an award presentation Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University.
  • Key to Awesomeness: This is Natasha's third year participating in the competition and her third time placing in the top 100. Although the 15-year-old still isn't sure what she'd like to do as a career, she says math is her favorite subject. "I enjoy doing the problems, and coming to an answer makes me feel good," Natasha said. The competition consists of two tests: The first is a 40-question multiple choice test and the second consists of five proof-based questions. In addition to having great math skills, Natasha also swims for Salem, plays tennis and is part of the student council.

Do you know a special young person in the community who deserves a round of applause because he volunteers instead of playing video games after school? Or maybe your daughter's science club is trying to challenge the way we think about the energy crisis. Or maybe your son's lacrosse team won its first game in three years. Everyone deserves a little attention, and we want to tell these stories.

So e-mail your Whiz Kid nominations to Editor Jessica Nunez at Jessica.Nunez@patch.com. Please include the name, age, school, achievement and key to awesomeness, as well as a photo. Then come back every Wednesday for our Whiz Kid spotlight; you never know who will be up next.
