Plymouth-Canton Considers Renaming Starkweather Program

The Plymouth-Canton Board of Education received a proposal earlier this month from Superintendent Jeremy Hughes to rename the Starkweather Alternative Education program as Starkweather Academy at Fiegel, according to the district website.

According to the posting, Hughes made the suggestion at a Feb. 12 Board of Education meeting. 

Board policies regarding the renaming of district facilities require a two-month period before board approval, allowing citizens and stakeholders an opportunity to comment on the proposed renaming. The board is scheduled to consider approval at its April 23 meeting, the district website indicated.

Those wishing to comment on the renaming should reply through the Suggestion Box on this website, or directly to the district’s communications office at info@pccsmail.net.

According to the district, the new proposed name is intended to reflect the program’s stature as a regular high school program, meeting all graduation requirements of the Michigan Merit Curriculum. It also is intended to honor and preserve the name of Fiegel school in the community. The Starkweather program, previously housed in Plymouth's Old Village, was moved to Fiegel when it was closed as an elementary school in June 2012.
