Plymouth High School Teacher Charged After Arrest

Raymond Charles Schepansky faces three gun-related charges, including a 2-year felony.

Plymouth High School teacher Raymond Charles Schepansky, 52, was arraigned Saturday in 34th District Court in Romulus on the following charges:

  • Carrying a concealed weapon, which carries a possibility of five years in prison.
  • Possession of a weapon on school property (a weapon-free zone), possible five years in prison.
  • Felony firearm, which has a possible two-year sentence.

Schepansky was arrested Thursday morning by after he arrived on the Plymouth Canton Educational Park campus. Police said he had a handgun and ammunition in his car. School district officials allege that he had made threats Wednesday against other school officials, and those threats were reported to school administrators.

After being confronted with the allegation, Schepansky was told to stay home Thursday, school officials said.

"The evidence in this case is very disturbing," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy said in a statement issued Saturday morning. "Unfortunately, charges against teachers is becoming more common in Wayne County, but these alleged facts are a first for my administration."

No one was injured in Thursday's incident. The campus, which comprises , and high schools, was closed Thursday after police investigators could not locate Schepansky on Wednesday evening. The schools reopened on Friday, with counselors on hand to support students and staff.

According to school officials many were upset about the incident, as Schepansky was well-liked by students. Schrepansky has taught military history at the school for nearly 12 years.

The district is now closed for spring break and will reopen April 25.

Schepansky remains in custody with bond set at $100,000. A preliminary hearing is set for April 29 at the 35th District Court in Plymouth.
