Rep. Dian Slavens Test-Drives P-CEP Students' Hoops-Playing Robot

While Rep. Dian Slavens (D-Canton) usually can be seen driving a Ford, on Wednesday she got to test-drive another locally made product: A basketball-playing robot.

The Plymouth-Canton Educational Park's Lightning Robotics team, part of the nationwide FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) organization that promotes tech-savvy programs in schools, showed off its robotic hoops star to Slavens on Wednesday at .

Slavens even got to man the controls, driving the robot around the Salem cafeteria.

While summer vacation is in progress for the students, the team members — as well as some alums and advisers — were eager to show Slavens the tricks they've "trained" the robot to perform with computer programming skills.

With the robot, the team capped what team member Jeffrey Hess called its best year ever with two appearances in the finals of separate competitions with other schools.
