New Home, Apparel and Gift Store Opens in Downtown Plymouth

Birch Wood, which opened Oct. 1, will open its second floor to the public on Tuesday.

Since Jessica Reginek was little, she's wanted to have her own store, the 26-year-old said.

Reginek used to play store with her very own cash register, according to her mother, Deborah Reginek.

"For Christmas we had to buy her a real cash register when she was a kid," Deborah Reginek said. "She would sit outside and play store with all the neighbors and charge them. And that's the truth. We had to buy her a real one, not a toy, she didn't want a toy. She had to have the 'real McCoy.'"

Now with the opening of Plymouth's newest business, Birch Wood, Reginek's dream has finally become realty.

Birch Wood opened Oct. 1 in the former Perfectly Sweet Cakes & Desserts location, next to Cozy Café.

"I've been working on this a few years," Reginek said. "My mom and I would go to estate sales and get pieces of display work for the store, but then when I quit my job in July, it just pushed me to open sooner (than planned).

At estate sales, Reginek collected barn wood, old windows, display cabinets and more. Anything with kind of an old look, she said.

"We have home decor, apparel, gifts and antiques," she said. "We wanted to make sure we had a mixture of everything so that when people come in here, everybody has something that would grab their attention. It's not like you're walking into a clothing store and you have to buy a clothing item. You can go buy a baby item or a candle. Just an array of things."

Reginek said she chose Plymouth as the location for her business because her mom and grandfather both grew up here.

"When I was a kid, we would come down here shopping all the time," she said. "And just driving through with all the Christmas lights and stuff, It's just awesome. It's like Frankenmuth."

Birch Wood will open its upstairs section on Tuesday. The store is a Flexsteel furniture dealer, and will carry sofas and other assorted home decor on the second floor.

The store also has an outdoors type theme, with concrete floors and lots of earth tone colors.

"We did lots of painting and decorating and giving it that different look," Deborah Reginek said. "I've had people come in here and say it looks like a store in Europe because of the street signs and cement floors."

It's also where the name comes from.

"I love Birch trees, they're my favorite," Reginek said.

Birch Wood is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. For more information, like them on Facebook
