31st Annual Canton Cup Soccer Tournament Returns Memorial Day Weekend

Canton Public Safety Department issues temporary traffic order for Denton Road during tournament.

A Memorial Day Weekend tradition continues as the Canton Soccer Club hosts the 31st Annual Canton Cup Soccer Tournament Memorial Day weekend on over 50 fields in Canton.

The largest tournament of its kind in the state, the 2013 Canton Cup will be held Friday from 5-9 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.  There will be 577 teams competing in this event at the event.

Teams will be comprised of boys ages 8 to 19 and girls ages 8 to 15. Each team is set to play a three game minimum with playoffs scheduled for each age group. Participating teams with over 9,000 players will travel from Michigan, Ontario, Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania to take part in over 1000 games, in one of the Midwest's largest club-based tournaments.

"The Canton Soccer Club has always been committed to the best interests of the players and high quality soccer in an atmosphere that stresses teamwork, sportsmanship, and skilled soccer play that will help players gain a life-long love and appreciation for the sport," said Darryl Noel, 2013 Canton Cup Soccer Tournament Director in a news release. "We strive to create an environment of growth for all players that is fun, challenging but most importantly rewarding for everyone involved in the game."

Preparations are still being made by over 200 volunteers and staff for this exciting tournament, presented by the Canton Soccer Club and sanctioned by the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association and the United States Youth Soccer Association. An audience of over 40,000 is expected to attend over the weekend.

Five Canton venues will be used to host this massive competition, including:  25 fields and the event headquarters in Independence Park, located at Denton & Cherry Hill Roads; 9 fields in Heritage Park, located at Heritage Parkway and Canton Center Road; 3 fields in Griffin Park, located at Cherry Hill and Sheldon Roads; and 12 fields in the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park High School, located at Joy and N. Canton Center Road.

The Canton Public Safety Department has issued a temporary traffic order, changing the speed limit on Denton Road to 25 miles per hour during the tournament. 

The speed limit change will be in effect during the following times:

  • May 24 from 4-9 p.m.
  • May 25 from 7 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • May 26 from 7 a.m.-2 p.m.
