Canton native Allison Schmitt anchors final leg of record 4x100 relay to win her third gold medal this week.

Canton native Allison Schmitt earned her fifth medal — and third gold — of the 2012 Olympic Games in London today, anchoring Team USA's women's 4x100 relay.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Schmitt anchored the final leg of the race, helping propel the Americans to a world-record time of 3:52.05.

According to Fox News, the team shaved 0.14 seconds off the time set by China at the 2009 world championships.

Schmitt, a 2008 graduate, was a late addition to anchor teammates Missy Franklin, Rebecca Soni and Dana Vollmer. Teammate Jessica Hardy had to withdraw from the event after making the 50-meter freestyle final, the report said.

It was the first time the United States earned gold in the event since 2000.
