Budding Hockey Players Keep Cool at Whalers Hockey School
This was the last week for Plymouth Whalers Hockey School.
While August temperatures have not exactly been soaring this summer, young hockey players have still been keeping it cool on the ice at Whalers Hockey School at Compuware Arena.
The school, which has been around in one form or another since building opened in 1996, teaches young players of all different ages and abilities about hockey and helps them develop new skills.
Pete Krupsky, director of communications and community relations, said the camp starts in early August and goes for three weeks. The hockey schools are run by Plymouth Whalers Associate Coach Joe Stefan along with help from Whaler players like Mitch Jones and former Whalers player Alex Aleardi.
"What I love about it, is you see smiles in the rink whenever these kids are here, with their parents." Krupsky said. "The players are learning about hockey in a real relaxed atmosphere. They may grumble a little when they get up in the morning, but once they get here and start working with the players, they have fun. It's a win-win for everybody involved."
Krupsky said running the hockey school is a great way to get the new hockey season underway - Whalers training camp starts the last week in August.
"We love to see the kids off the couch and away from the computers and active on the ice," Krupsky said.
This past week was the last for this year's Whalers Hockey School. However, Compuware Arena offers additional hockey schools as well as learn to skate and learn to play clinics.
