Detroit Catholic Central wins the MHSAA State final, beating Davison.

Detroit Catholic Central won the MHSAA D1 Team State Finals held at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek this weekend in probably the most dramatic fashion possible: a come from behind third period pin by 125-pounder Evan Toth, in what was no doubt deja-vu for both the Shamrocks and Toth.

Entering this weekend’s final round of the state tournament, Davison High School and the Catholic Central High School boasted a combined 17 MHSAA titles and three runner-up finishes. Both teams featured a combined 21 ranked wrestlers. The highly-anticipated rematch lived up to the hype, as the Shamrocks pulled out a thrilling 29-26 victory.

The dual started at the 130 pound weight class and Davison got off to a great start by setting the tone and creating one of the biggest individual upsets of the weekend  at 135 pounds when Davison Junior and #4 ranked (140) Dominic Russ pinned CC's #1 ranked (135) Ken Bade in 1:22.

The Cards and the Shamrocks traded wins, but the Cardinals maintained the lead for most of the match and appeared to be headed for their first MHSAA title since 2006 when they took a 26-23 lead on 3-1 decision by #1 ranked (112) Lincoln Olson over CC's #3 ranked (119) Trevor Zedebski at 119 pounds.  The last time these two power-houses met up, it resulted in a Tech Fall over Zedebski.  Zedebski wasn't going down easy. Although Olson came out with the victory, it's hard to not give Zedebski some props for making this a very exciting re-match.

Wins and losses were handed out for both sides but it  all led to the 125 pound round as CC fans and Cardinal fans were on their feet cheering on their respective #7 ranked Davison's Humphrey and CC's #8 ranked Toth and a team State Title which virtually erupted in glory for the Shamrocks and sheer disappointment for the Cardinals.

Toth's Cinderella story begins at the 2011 MHSAA State Finals D1 match vs. Oxford HS. Toth lost his match and the Oxford Wildcats stole the state title away from CC 26-25. This 2013 version however has a very different ending.

Davison junior Derek Humphrey got off to quick start and controlled the match, leading 4-1 after the first period and 9-2 after the second. As Toth trailed, he threw a headlock and recorded the six-point victory with :36 seconds left to send the Shamrock bench and many of the capacity crowd into a frenzy on both sides of the venue.

Catholic Central reached the finals by defeating first-time attendee Rochester, 48-13, in the morning semifinals.

Davison beat Hartland, 44-15, to advance.

The Individual State Finals begin next week at the Palace of Auburn Hills. CC will send 12 wrestlers, of a possible 14, to the Palace.

Five of those wrestlers will enter as a number one seed.

Those wrestlers are Ken Bade, Malik Amine, Logan Marcicki, Drew Garcia and Bob Coe. Other wrestlers making the trip to Auburn Hills are Myles Amine, Mike Babicz, Nick Giese, Trevor Zdebski, Evan Toth, Parker O'Brien and Jimmy Russell.
