Four Whalers Taken in NHL Draft

Two from Plymouth taken in first round of NHL Entry Draft.

The Plymouth Whalers had a strong showing in the first round of the National Hockey League Entry Draft on Friday at Xcel Center in St. Paul, MN. 

The Whalers' Stefan Noesen and Rickard Rakell were selected in the first round of the seven-round draft.

Noesen was taken 21st overall by the Ottawa Senators while Rakell went 30th overall to the Anaheim Ducks.

According to a news release from the team, the last time the teams had two players taken in the first round was in 2001, when Stephen Weiss was taken fourth overall by Florida and Jason Bacashihua was selected 28th overall by the Dallas Stars.

Noesen and Rakell were two of four Whalers taken in the two-day draft. Earlier today, Garrett Meurs was taken in the fifth round (123rd overall) by the Colorado Avalanche, and goaltender Matt Mahalak went in the sixth round (163rd overall) to the Carolina Hurricanes, the news release said.
