In Brief: Whalers Players to Appear at Area Tim Hortons on Wednesday

Players to raise funds for Tim Hortons Children's Foundation; Whalers sign draft pick Matthew Mistele

 The Plymouth Whalers will be appearing at several Tim Hortons locations in the area Wednesday to help raise funds for the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation, according to a news release from the team. 

The event, Camp Day, is one day each year when every penny from coffee sales at Tim Hortons stores across Canada and the United States will be donated to the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation, the news relefse said.  Campers aged nine to 12 years old attend a 10-day summer camp session or a seven-day winter camp session, at one of the Foundation’s six camps in Canada and the United States.

 The Whalers will be appearing at the following Tim Hortons locations Wednesday:

  •  11 a.m. – 1 p.m. - Canton (45515 Michigan Ave.) – Alex Aleardi, Austin Levi. 
  • 1.1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. - Livonia (33500 Plymouth Road) – Tom Wilson, Garrett Meurs, Max Iafrate. 

In addition to the Whalers supporting the event as waiters and beverage servers, the news release said, they’ll be passing out a limited amount of Whalers tickets for the 2011-12 season. The players also will be available for autographs and photos. 

According to the news release, the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization founded in 1974. Funding for the foundation comes from Camp Day, fundraising activities, special events, year-round public donations collected through counter and drive-thru coin boxes and other donations. Whalers sign left wing Matthew Mistele

The Whalers announced on Tuesday the signing of second-round draft pick Matthew Mistele, according to a news release from the team. 

Mistele, 15, was selected 33rd overall in the 2011 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection draft. 

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound left winger scored 43 goals with 34 assists for 77 points and 50 penalty minutes in 60 games last season for the Whitby (Ontario) Wildcats. He participated in the team's rookie orientation May 20-21.

Mistele will attend school this fall at the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park. 

Seguin, Bruins begin Stanley Cup Finals in Vancouver on Wednesday

Former Plymouth Whalers standout Tyler Seguin and the NHL's Boston Bruins will face off 8 p.m. Wednesday against the Vancouver Canucks in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Bruins eliminated the Tampa Bay Lightning on May 27 to win the Eastern Conference title in seven games and advance to the Stanley Cup Finals against Vancouver, the Western Conference champions.
