Canton's Anthony Abro takes his undefeated record into Saturday's Division 1 final at 189 pounds.

Abro beat Austin Pickering, 5-2, in the semfinals. Abro faces Detroit Catholic Central's Miles Trealout in the championship match.

"I'm 10-0 against him right now," said Abro of Trealout. "It's just one more."

Abro, who placed fourth in the state finals last season, waved to a large group of Canton supporters when he was announced the winner in the semifinal.

"It feels great," Abro said. "I have a lot of support in Canton and it's nice to be able to give back to them."

The championship finals begin at 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

"Anthony has been focused all year," Canton coach Mike Pantaleo said. "This is something he wanted. He worked all summer, lifting, running and wrestling to get this opportunity for himself.

Canton's Ben Griffin (103) and Salem's Cody Korpus (119) advanced to the third round of the consolation bracket which begins Saturday morning.

"Ben is a very talented freshman," Pantaleo said. "He wrestles his heart out. He's another one that put in the time over the summer. He deserves this opportunity."

Here are Friday's results:

  • Korpus advanced in the consolation round with a hard-fought, 4-1, win over Kevin Kennerly of Farmington. "It's amazing," Korpus said. "That kid is strong and he just kept holding me down."
  • Plymouth's Alec Breckenridge was eliminated in the consolation round with a 6-3 loss to Swartz Creek's Alexander Donoho.
  • Griffin broke a scoreless tie with a reversal, just eight seconds into the third period, en route to a 2-1 victory over Nick Braet from Chippewa Valley. Braet escaped from Griffin with :34 left in the bout; however, Griffin closed out the match via a sprawl to stop a takedown attempt inside of :10 seconds remaining. Earlier in the day, Griffin, a freshman, lost his second match of the season in a 12-6 rout at the hands of Martin Rodriguez from Temperance Bedford.
  • Canton wrestler Ben Poirier (285 pounds) lost just his fifth match of the season, a 4-2 defeat in overtime, against Rochester Hills Stoney Creek's Serge Andreou. With the loss, Poirier is knocked out of the tournament. Earlier in the day, Poirier lost a 2-1 defeat in overtime to Mark Byrd of Flint Carman-Ainsworth.
  • Abro kept his perfect record intact in a 7-3 win over Charles Sovel. Abro led by only one point with 1:06 left in the bout, however, he scored his second takedown and grabbed a three-point lead. “We told him to stay in good position. Our condition is great and when he got tired we took advantage,” Canton assistant coach Mike Pontaleo said. Abro is now 57-0 this season and remains the No. 1 in the state of Michigan at the 189-pound class.
  • Plymouth's Said Youssef (125) was knocked out of the tournament by Brighton's Evan Hoshaw.
  • Zach Marsh (140) of Canton was pinned with :44 left in the third period by Brian Gibbs of Temperance Bedford. Marsh previously trailed 9-2 after Gibbs was able to escape and grab another take down. With the loss Marsh moves into the consolation round.
