Synchronized Skate Clubs to Compete at U.S. Championships in Plymouth

2 locally based Allegro! synchronized skate teams to compete at U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships at Compuware Arena.

High-level competition isn't just for kids anymore.

Two Allegro! synchronized skating teams made up of adults ages 21-60 will compete this week at the 2013 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships at Compuware Arena in Plymouth Township, according to a news release from the club.

From Feb. 27-March 2, the Plymouth venue will see teams of all ages from around the United States competing for the top spots in their respective divisions.

Looking to regain the national title, the 2012 National silver medalists Allegro! Masters Team skates to "Dance of the Vampires." According to the news release, the program is technically demanding, yet artistically intricate and moving.

The masters team is fresh off a win at the 2013 Midwestern Sectional Championships held January in Kalamazoo. They also brought home the silver medal from the Dr. Richard Porter Synchronized Skating Competition in Ann Arbor in December 2012. The team traveled to Lowell, MA, in early January for the Colonial Classic where it earned another silver medal.

"Our team has been progressing throughout the season, making technical and artistic improvements to bring our best skate to Nationals," Erin MacDonald-Behrend of Trenton, skater on the masters team, said in the news release. "We will be fierce, precise, and enthralling when we take the ice."

The Allegro! Adult Team skates to a Motor City theme this season, with songs from Eminem, KISS, and Journey. Bringing a high level of technical difficulty and an intense sense of artistry, the adult team looks to earn its highest scores of the season when it competes on March 2.

Highlights of the adult team's season include a third-place finish at the Mid-America Synchronized Skating Competition in Fraser in January and solid skates and finishes at the Dr. Richard Porter Synchronized Skating Competition in Ann Arbor in December 2012 and the 2013 Midwestern Synchronized Skating Championships in Kalamazoo in January, the news release indicated.

"Our team is thrilled to skate to hometown music for a hometown crowd,” said Erica Grunwald of Chesterfield, skater on the adult team. "We are proud to represent Detroit and are excited to perform our best skate of the season at home."

The Allegro! synchronized skating teams were formed in 2008 under the direction of Carrie Brown. The adult team is comprised of skaters ranging from 21-48 years of age and the masters skaters range from 27-60 years of age. Almost all of the skaters participated in the sport as children. The teams train out of the Eddie Edgar Arena in Livonia and Compuware Arena in Plymouth.
