Plymouth Whalers Owner Makes Hockey History

Peter Karmanos Jr. is among a handful of people named to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

Plymouth Whalers Owner Peter Karmanos Jr. and Michigan State Hockey Coach Ron Mason are among five names heading to the United States Hockey Hall of Fame as the Class of 2013, according to the Detroit News

The other three being honored include former NHL players Doug Weight, Bill Guerin and former women's hockey player Cindy Curley, according to a press release from USA Hockey. The induction ceremony will take place later this summer.

U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame inductees are chosen on the basis of extraordinary contribution to the sport of hockey in the United States.

Karmanos, also the owner and CEO of the NHL Carolina Hurricanes, has received many awards within his many years in Hockey. In 2012, he received USA Hockey's Distinguished Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2010, and in December of 1997, he was one of four recipients of the NHL's Lester Patrick Award for outstanding service to hockey in the United States.
