Whalers Alum Justin Williams Wins Second Stanley Cup

Los Angeles Kings win first Cup in 45-year history.

Plymouth Whalers alum Justin Williams has a unique place in Plymouth franchise history.

He's the only Whaler player in the team's 22-year history to drink from the Stanley Cup twice.

Williams and the Los Angeles Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils, 6-1, on Monday in Game Six of the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals to clinch the series, four-games-to-two.

While Williams is part of a Stanley Cup champion for the second time (he also won with Carolina in 2006), the Kings took the cup for the first time in their 45-year history.

"Here we are, look around, this is what we wanted, this is what this city's wanted and it makes it extra special that everyone around us is just as happy as we are," Williams told the Los Angeles Daily News.

In all, Williams - playing on a forward line with captain Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar - scored four goals with 11 assists for 15 points and was +8 in 20 playoff games for the Kings, who won the Stanley Cup as the eighth seed in the Western Conference.

In all, the Kings listed 10 Ontario Hockey League alums and 15 Canadian Hockey League alums on their Stanley Cup winning roster.

A check of Stanley Cup winning teams and their rosters shows Williams is the only active Plymouth alum playing to win two Stanley Cups.

Adam Graves - who played for the Windsor Compuware Spitfires, owned by Whalers owner Peter Karmanos, Jr. from 1984-89 - won Stanley Cups in 1990 with Edmonton and 1994 with the New York Rangers.

Here is a list of Whalers alumni who have won the Stanley Cup as players:

  • 2012 - Justin Williams, Los Angeles.
  • 2011 - Tyler Seguin and Gregroy Campbell, Boston.
  • 2006 - Justin Williams, Chad LaRose and Jesse Boulerice, Carolina.
