Whalers Open 2012-13 Season on Wednesday With Training Camp

Plymouth to begin off-ice testing on Wednesday before facing Thursday and Friday in scrimmages.

The Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers open the 2012-13 season on Wednesday with training camp at in Plymouth Township. 

The team will be participating in off-ice testing on Wednesday. 

The Whalers hit the ice in scrimmages from 9-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.  The scrimmages are free and open to the public and media. Rosters will be provided the day of the scrimmages.

Compuware Arena is located at 14900 Beck Road in Plymouth Township, between 5 Mile and M-14. Plymouth opens its preseason schedule against Windsor on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at Yack Arena in Wyandotte. Plymouth and Windsor will meet again on Sept. 3 at 2 pm at Windsor Family Credit Union Center.

Plymouth finished 47-18-2-1 last season, finishing second overall in the OHL's Western Conference while winning its 10th West Division title over its 22-year history.  The Whalers made the OHL playoffs for the 21st consecutive season last year - a current OHL record. The Whalers expect to be in the middle of the Western Conference race again in 2012-13. 

Plymouth features four first-round National Hockey League draft choices - Stefan Noesen (Ottawa), Rickard Rakell (Anaheim), JT Miller (New York Rangers) and Tom Wilson (Washington) - in addition to NHL-drafts Matt Mahalak (Carolina), Cody Payne (Boston), Gianluca Curcuruto (Columbus), Garrett Meurs (Colorado), Mitchell Heard (Colorado), Connor Carrick (Washington) and Simon Karlsson (Nashville). The Whalers open the 2012-13 season on Sept. 21 in Sault Ste. Marie, with the home opener set for Sept. 22 at 7:05 p.m. at Compuware Arena against the Belleville Bulls.
