The NHL has canceled the Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, scheduled to take place Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor before potentially record-breaking crowds, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The NHL and its players union have been in a lockout since Sept. 16 amid a dispute over a new collective bargaining agreement, the Free Press reported.
According to the Free Press, the cancellation also will scrub the two-week Hockeytown Winter Festival at a second rink in Detroit's Comerica Park, which was set to feature the Plymouth Whalers as part of an Ontario Hockey League doubleheader, as well as a match between Plymouth and Canton high schools.
