Stamp Collectors Gather at the Plymouth Show

The West Suburban Stamp Club (WSSC) presents the 45th annual Plymouth Show. Thirty-eight dealers from nine states and Canada will sell stamps, covers, cachet covers and supplies for stamp collectors. Show hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the Hellenic Cultural Center, 36375 Joy Road, in Westland. Admission and parking are free.

The United States Post Office, as well as the United Nations and Nordica postal services will be represented at the show selling stamps and and postal collectibles.

The American Topical Association (ATA) will be represented at the show to provide information to collectors interested in collecting a specific topic on stamps.

The Plymouth Show is a qualifying national show in the APS “World Series of Philately.” The Grand Award winner will be eligible to compete in the August Champion of Champion exhibition at STAMPSHOW 2014 in Hartford, Conn., and will receive a framed duck drawing by wildlife artist Larry Hillard. A reserve grand award, five levels of medals, and numerous special awards also will be presented.

A panel of accredited American Philatelic Society (APS) judges will select the winners of both local and national awards. These will be presented during the Plymouth Show Awards banquet. Stamps in Your Closet, a free service, offers guidance from experienced collectors about collections that have been inherited or rediscovered. Sessions at 11 a.m.-3 p.m. each day.

Classes are set for 11 a.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Sunday for beginning collectors. They’ll receive basic collecting tools, free stamps and tips on starting a collection. Check out details and sign up for the youth sessions by clicking here, or adult sessions at this link.
