Art in the Park Returns to Plymouth with Duck Tape Display, Living Mural and More

Art in the Park, which draws about 100,000 people to Plymouth, will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The 34th Annual Art in the Park returns to downtown Plymouth this weekend with more than 370 artists from 32 different states.

That number includes 75 new artists exhibiting for the first time this year, and three new promotional tour exhibits.

MorningStar Farms will be grilling veggie burgers on site, The Michigan G Guage Operations Club (MGGOC) will feature a live G-Scale Train Display and The “Duck Tape® Rolls Across America Tour" will display 31-foot, bright green “Duck Bus”  that allows Duck Tape enthusiasts to see the latest and greatest in all things duck tape.

Raychel Rork, one of the event organizers said that promotional tours like these contact Art in the Park about exhibiting.

"We've been lucky enough to get several over the past years because of crowd and exposure that Art in the Park has grown into," she said. "We really love the duct tape because obviously it's creative and funky - and a lot of kids and artists are using duct tape now for art projects. So that was a really good fit.

Art in the Park will also feature returning favorites such as My Adventure Theater, the Children's Mural, Erin Dillenbeck's chalk mural at Main and Penniman and Kristen Dillenbeck-Anderson's Living Mural.

One Love, the reggae music band will feature performances at the corner of Ann Arbor Trail and Forest Avenue. George Tait, The Living Statue will also make an appearance.

According to Rork, Art in the Park takes a full year of planning.

"It's nonstop," she said. "It's everyday of the year. A lot of people arrive and think it magically happens."

Rork said planning Art in the Park is a full time job, and with the help of about 70 volunteers over the weekend, the successful event draws about 100,000 people to downtown Plymouth.

"I think it's always changing, it's always exciting - we're never doing the same thing, so it's not boring," she said. "It is stressful, but the most fun thing is going, being there and watching people enjoying themselves buying a gift or buying something for your home that you love that somebody put their blood, sweat and tears into making."

Art in the Park hours are Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visitors attending Art in the Park are encouraged to park at the ACH Plant  located at 14425 Sheldon Road, just off of M-14 in Plymouth and take the free round trip shuttle service.

The shuttle will run continuously all weekend. The drop off point will be Plymouth City Hall.
