Olympics: Canton's Allison Schmitt Advances to Finals in 200 Freestyle

Canton native could earn Olympic gold Tuesday at Olympic Games in London.

Already equipped with bronze and silver medals this year, Canton's Allison Schmitt has her eye on the gold when she swims tomorrow in the 200-meter freestyle final.

The 2008 graduate of advanced today to the women's 200-meter freestyle final, which takes place Tuesday night in London. Schmitt finished with a time of 1 minute, 56.15 seconds, the second-fastest among qualifiers. 

While Olympic gold is on Schmitt's radar, she won't talk about it. She held back today when asked about the top prize during an interview for the Detroit Free Press.

"You guessed it. You're trying to get me to say it,” she told the Free Press reporter. “I’m just trying to bring home a medal for the U.S. tomorrow.”
