Social Media Watches Allison Schmitt, Team USA Claim Gold in 4x200 Relay

2008 Canton High grad earns second gold medal, praise after anchoring Team USA's gold-medal effort Wednesday.

From Twilight actor and fellow Michigan native Taylor Lautner subtly correcting the spelling of her name in a tweet to being bombarded by international media, it's been a whirlwind 48 hours for Canton native Allison Schmitt (not Schmidt, as Lautner helpfully pointed out) after the swimmer nabbed her second Olympic gold medal in as many days Wednesday.

The social media world was abuzz Wednesday night when a tape-delayed broadcast showed Team USA's remarkable in the 4x200 freestyle relay, anchored by Schmitt.

The event had taken place earlier in the day at the London Olympics and word had leaked about Schmitt's second gold, but the chatter online picked up once fans witnessed on televison Schmitt propel her relay team to the gold.
